Supporting Critical Infrastructure: Mi-Jack Cranes on the LA 1 Bridge Project

Mi-Jack Products’ MJ150HD and MJ70HD Travelift cranes are playing a critical role in phase II of the LA 1 Bridge Improvement Project with Primoris Services Corporation. This large-scale infrastructure effort aims to strengthen and modernize a vital transportation route in southern Louisiana.

Louisiana Highway 1 serves as the only land access point to Port Fourchon and Grand Isle—both essential to the nation’s energy infrastructure and designated as a federally recognized High Priority Corridor. It also functions as a key evacuation route for coastal communities, making this project essential to improving safety for Louisiana residents.

Strengthening a Critical Lifeline: The Port Fourchon–Leeville Bridge

The first phase of the project delivered 11 miles of elevated highway from Leeville to Port Fourchon. The initial segment, the Tomey Doucet Bridge, opened to traffic in 2009, followed by the Leeville-to-Fourchon connection in 2011.

Phase II will extend the elevated highway an additional eight miles, connecting Leeville to Golden Meadow. Construction is currently underway, with completion expected in 2027.

Engineered for Efficiency: Mi-Jack Travelift Cranes

During Phase II, two of Mi-Jack’s’ Travelift cranes—the MJ150HD and MJ70HD—are being used to transport materials across the jobsite. Equipped with rail wheels and operating on parallel tracks, the 150-ton and 70-ton rubber-tired gantry cranes work in tandem, with one operating above the other to maximize efficiency within the construction zone.

Mi-Jack Travelift cranes are well-suited for bridge construction and precast handling thanks to their exceptional maneuverability and lifting capabilities. With the ability to lift up to three times their wheelbase, these cranes enable continuous, around-the-clock movement of concrete components to keep the project on schedule and operations running smoothly.

“This project highlights the importance of reliable lifting solutions in complex infrastructure environments. Our Travelift cranes are designed to deliver the performance and efficiency needed to keep critical projects like this moving forward.”
