For owners and operators of rubber tired gantry (RTG) cranes, EcoCrane Battery Hybrid System is a unique, proven solution that retrofits any existing electric RTG crane with battery-hybrid technology. This system allows owners and operators to realize substantial cost and environmental savings, without purchasing a new crane.
The patented system uniquely combines a small diesel engine/generator with a lithium-ion battery pack. It reduces the RTG’s traditional genset by a factor of 4 while still providing the power to operate at full performance.
EcoCrane replaces the large diesel engine of the RTG with a minimal ~150 horsepower diesel engine/generator that only operates to charge the battery pack. It not only yields a significant reduction in idle time and fuel costs, but also recovers regenerative energy that would otherwise be wasted. It also reduces noise, maintenance, and up to 99% of emissions, making it eligible for environmental and government grants.

The EcoCrane solution uses energy stored in a lithium-ion battery pack to perform functions such as propulsion, or lifting the containerized freight. But as the load is lowered, or the crane brakes, the Li-Ion system will “recover” the built-up kinetic energy that would have previously been “wasted”. This energy is recaptured and stored in the battery pack. This efficient re-use of energy translates into a substantial reduction in operating costs for the terminal.
